okay, sayaka honestly wasn't sure what to make of this man at first. he scared her a little bit, honestly? mostly intimidating-wise, but sayaka was genuinely enraptured by the story of what kind of knight he was, and that really set the whole stage for this mess to begin. he made her realize she's not nearly as certain as she once was, and it honestly made her more curious about the man. she didn't even expect him to believe her when they ended up talking after their first trip to nekyia, but suffice to say, that kindness also went a long way toward getting sayaka to trust fray outright, though it likely wasn't obvious at first. though it was hesitant; he was so quick to offer his home to her that she also became slightly suspicious, which is a lot of why she still kept something of a distance.
by the time he confronted her for going down into the nekyia alone, she definitely liked him, but she did not trust him very well at all. she was naturally just very wary and unsure of why he was bothering if he wasn't getting something out of it, and then it...hit, really, when he tried to explain that helping people is just what he wants to do, and the way he said it felt so strange and real in a way sayaka didn't expect. it kind of shattered sayaka's whole thought process regarding him, but more than anything, she didn't want for him to worry about her anymore so she was willing to at least play along. though, unbeknownst to her, she had basically latched onto fray at this point as one of the few people she was willing to trust without hesitation, even if she didn't fully understand why yet.
it took the anon conversation and the talk they had on the bench for sayaka to realize what she saw in fray; he finally admitted what he was to her, and while she was a little thrown, she found that it didn't matter that he had lied. because he didn't even have a self of his own; he was simply going off of what he knew, and in a lot of ways, sayaka saw a lot of similarities with her own issues. she at least wanted to stand by and support him for all of the support he'd given her, and he became the first to be trusted with her first name because of it.
it got easier as time went on to grow closer. they fought hard together in battle, sayaka helped him pick some outfits that he liked, they saved his boyfriend and their friends, and it didn't take long for sayaka to realize that she cared about fray a lot, though she couldn't put a name to the sort of friendship they had until after kirumi's palace; fray was the closest thing to family that she had ever had, and it made her all the more solid on the path she wanted to take in life. she wanted to be just like her big brother(s, as she'd eventually find out); a knight that could protect people and get close to them, in a genuine sense rather than the fake, sugary veneer of the idol world.
of course, this adoration does have it's moments of being a double-edged sword; she had a hard time bringing herself to fight fray when it was his turn on the palace wild ride, but eventually sayaka found her determination and saw him returned to them, and she wants nothing more than to make sure his path forward will be a pleasant one.
tl;dr: sayaka loves her big brother dammit. that is HER stray cat that she social linked and so help her if anyone tries to hurt him she WILL knock them out. but fray's genuinely someone she's glad to have helped find himself, while also being an inspiration in terms of kindness and chivalry. he inspired her path forward, and she wants nothing more than to make him proud of her.
